On November 23rd 2020, MTC founder and president Maka Chikowero was named the winner of the 2020 #SHEINSPIRESME Youth Award! The award is sponsored by the Chicago Red Stars women’s professional soccer club and she was one of three finalists in the youth (under 18) category.

The Chicago Red Stars #SHEINSPIRESME Award is an annual award that is presented to women who exemplify leadership, practice social responsibility, and inspire and uplift their community. “This is a win not just for me but for all the girls that I am supporting through my nonprofit,” Maka said in a statement after the announcement was made. “I hope all the girls I lead feel inspired to be game-changers for a more equal and just world. MTC girls, this is for you! Remember the future is female, the future is young, and the future is bright.”

The MTC Educate A Girl Inc board and advisors received the news of Maka’s win with joy and excitement. 2020 has been a difficult year in many ways. Schoolchildren have not been able to benefit from in-person learning and while many others around the world have not been able to access any learning services at all. Maka’s efforts through her organization have brought more attention to the situation of girls from rural communities in Zimbabwe. Many orphaned children drop out of school after primary school. Maka was one of 147 individuals from 42 countries who were nominated for the 2020 International Children’s Peace Prize although she was not one of the three finalists.
