Lean

Age: 15

Grade in 2022: US 8th - Zimbabwe Form 2

Background: My name is Leanne. I am 15 years old. I live in Village 17 Resettlement Area here in Mhondoro Ngezi. I live with my grandparents. My grandmother is gravely ill and is on medication for sore legs. My grandfather is the one who takes care of us. He cultivates vegetables in the family garden. Many times I am sent away from school for non-payment of fees. When grandfather sells his vegetables, I am then able to attend school but this is often late. I am happy with my Grade 7 examination results, especially in Mathematics. I would love to stay in school and hopefully go on to become a medical doctor one day and also help the needy in my community. I love to play chess in my free time as it helps me relax.

Shylet

Age: 14
Grade in 2022: US 8th - Zimbabwe Form 2
Background: I am 13 years old. I live near Gavhunga School but I fear I might drop out if no one helps me with school fees. My mother passed away when I was in ECD(preschool). I have been living with my grandmother ever since. These days my grandmother says she doesn't see very well and she also had back problems. My wish is to continue with my education and become a social worker when I am older. A lot of older people need help in this community. I would also want to help other orphaned children here and perhaps help my school as well. At school, I play handball.

Praise

Age: 14

Grade in 2022:
US 8th - Zimbabwe Form 2

Background: I am Praise. I am 14 years old this year. I live with my grandparents here in Village 20 of Manyoni Resettlement Area. My mother died six years ago and I have never met my father. This is why I now need help to stay in school since my grandparents are too old to work for me. My grandmother used to sell fruits to raise my school fees but she does not have the energy to do this these days. I have not yet made up my mind about what I hope to do when I grow up but whatever it is, I plan to help my local school with textbooks especially. I play netball whenever I get the time.

Amanda

Age: 14
Grade in 2022: US 8th - Zimbabwe Form 2
Background: I am Amanda. I am 14-year-old. I live in the Gavhunga area of Mhondoro Ngezi with my grandmother. She is too old to get small jobs to keep me in school now and she suffers from various ailments. My mother is late and I do not know anything about my father. I think I did OK in my Grade 7 exams and my wish to go to secondary school. If I stay in school, I can one day become a lawyer and also help girls like me in this village. I like writing my thoughts down and I also like playing handball.
